When you think of healthy food, the perception that comes to most would be food that’s tasteless, bland, or worse, vegetarian/vegan.
The idea of healthy food is such a turn-off that even if it does taste as good as the real deal, it’ll probably carry a hefty price tag. RM30 wild mushroom soup, anyone?
Fortunately, Sisu Pantry @ Bandar Bukit Raja features an extensive, reasonably-priced menu that’s not only nutritious and good for your tummy, but made with fresh, quality ingredients and plenty of love and care. To quote Chew Lian, the owner of Sisu Pantry: “If I won’t eat it, I won’t serve it.”
After a short walk up a flight of stairs and some cute art on the wall, you’ll reach the doors of Sisu Pantry! I personally like the shades of yellow used, and coincidentally, I wore yellow too š
Once you walk into Sisu, you can check out their menu that’s uniquely displayed on their mirrored fridge.
I find it a pretty cool and low-maintenance way to display their menu, and it’s easy to remove or edit things as needed.
The only cons I can think of are keeping the glass clean of fingerprints, and also what if the fridge is too frequently opened that customers won’t be able to read it properly. Or, what if they’re too busy checking themselves out in the mirror instead of thinking what to eat? š
Fortunately, the cafe is quite spacious and wide so you won’t have to worry about backing your chair into someone else’s. The tall windows also let in lots of natural light, so you also won’t need to awkwardly move to another table just to find the best lighting for your shots.
There’s also a little book corner by the door, excellent for if you want to disconnect from your phone and get lost in your mind.
I saw books for both children and adults, so it’s pretty good for all ages! Sometimes adults want to read children’s books too š
The Vegetable Tomato Pappardelle (RM18) was warm and comforting, with well-seasoned creamy tomato sauce, tender pasta, and a medley of vegetables topped with shredded cheese.
The cheese is very lightly shredded, so you don’t have to worry about the pasta being too cheesy. It’s not even stringy! I would’ve liked mine to have more cheese, but that’s me š
A unique dish in Sisu Pantry would be their Keto Thai Char Kuey Teow (RM22). Why is it unique? 1) Because it’s keto, 2) They use konjac in place of the usual flat noodles.
The dish is served with chicken cubes, eggs, fresh prawns (legitimately fresh), vegetables, mushrooms, etc. Accompanied by a side of apple cider vinegar chili (yes!), our friend remarked that the chili tastes just like the one her mother makes š
P/S: We requested for the chili to be separated because of me (hehe), so it’s usually cooked altogether!
The last for us to share, we had the Vege Duck Egg Cauli Pizza (RM22). You might think that oh, it’s just a pizza with vegetables, duck eggs, and cauliflower. But noooo, you’re sorely mistaken, because this is what it is.
The toppings were generously stacked and colourful for the eye to see. Then we sliced the pizza and took a bite… “What’s this?” It’s not pizza dough!
The base of the pizza tastes very much like a potato waffle that we’ve had before, so we were super confused. It also tasted a little eggy, but it wasn’t strong so we were even more confused.
Eventually we asked and she said, “Oh, it’s cauliflower.”
Mind = blown. And we went “OHHHH” in unison.
Needless to say, it was a really nutritious pizza and actually makes quite a balanced meal because of the colours (eat the rainbow!). We felt kids would like it too, and it’s a ‘pizza’ that moms won’t mind letting them eat š
For drinks, we had the Rose Cream Latte (RM15) and Maple Matcha Latte (RM12). The latte smelled fragrant and tasted of rose, whereas the matcha had hints of umami-ness at the end.
She also gave us a treat to sample one of her desserts-in-experiment, an egg-less cupcake made of coconut flour, flax seed, and almond meal. The cupcake was delightfully moist on the inside, fudge-y chocolatey with buttercream, garnished with cacao nibs and edible rose petals.
The salt in the icing complemented the sweetness of the cupcake, which was something I really liked. The garnish gave a crunch to the soft texture too.
I’m a fan of opposites that complement each other. I like salty desserts and crunches in my ice-cream, so this combination was just the sweet spot for me.
If you told me this was a healthy dessert, I would not believe you at all. It tasted exactly like a normal cupcake.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try any of her other bakes as we visited very early, and most of her bakes are only on-demand. I did try some of her madeleines before and they were simply *chef’s kiss*.
As Sisu Pantry is located in Bandar Bukit Raja, Klang, which may seem like another world away for some, the mere distance may deter you from visiting. However, fret not because your friendly neighbourhood panda has got a simple cafe-hopping/jalan-jalan itinerary for you!
Arranged in no particular order:
- Sisu Pantry
- BookXcess @ Sunsuria Forum
- KFC
- Setia City Mall & the park outside
- Eco Ardence
- Setia Alam night market
I can hear you saying, “Huh? Why KFC?”
This is why.
Don’t forget to eat some cheesy wedges to thank me! š
